In 1961 the Institute changed its name to the South African Institute of Steel Construction and more recently to the Southern African Institute of Steel Construction. Today the Institute boasts with a membership of nearly 600 members.

ISO (INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION OF STANDARIZATION)
ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is the world's largest developer of standards. Although ISO's principal activity is the development of technical standards, ISO standards also have important economic and social repercussions. ISO standards make a positive difference, not just to engineers and manufacturers for whom they solve basic problems in production and distribution, but to society as a whole.

The International Standards which ISO develops are very useful. They are useful to industrial and business organizations of all types, to governments and other regulatory bodies, to trade officials, to conformity assessment professionals, to suppliers and customers of products and services in both public and private sectors, and, ultimately, to people in general in their roles as consumers and end users.

SABS
In terms of the Standards Act, 1993 (Act No. 29 of 1993), the SABS is required to develop and disseminate standards, and to provide information and guidance on standards matters, so as to promote and maintain standardisation and quality. The Review of the South African Standards, Quality, Accreditation and Metrology Infrastructure (SQAM Review) has also recommended that the SABS be encouraged to develop value-added services to complement its standards role, and implement innovative ways of selling its standards services (i.e. electronic publications and web-based sales).

The Information Services Department provides standardisation services that improve the competitiveness of South African industry, through the understanding, maintenance and development of standardisation products and services.

The Department provides standards and general information services for both SABS Commercial and SABS Non-Commercial, as well as for external clients, including clients from industry, government, educational institutions and private individuals.
